During the summer and autumn I collect samples of wild flora. Some materials I know to be successful dye materials and some are experiments.
I test different concentrations on different fabrics. I explore the results of different dye mordants, such as iron extracted from rusty nail and vinegar solutions.
Once I have determined a reliable color source, I begin to explore color combinations, mordants, over dyeing, and resist treatments.
The construction process of quilt making is the most introspective. An opportunity to be more controlled and meticulous, design piecing and hand quilting offer opportunities for technical exploration and play.
